Local History
Some of the following events form part of Bishop Auckland Civic Society's annual programme. The Society was formed in 1989 to safeguard the character of Bishop Auckland and to stimulate public awareness and interest in the town - past, present and future. It holds bi-monthly meetings in the Town Hall and new members are always welcome.

Never Again: The story of Bob Hardisty, Englands greatest amateur footballer.

Alan has been a fan of Bishop Auckland Football Club, and of Bob Hardisty, since childhood. It has taken over 5 years of detailed research, and many hundreds of hours work in development, to produce this definitive account of Hardisty’s life. Alan will be launching his book on Wednesday evening, in the company of some former Bishop Auckland FC players.

Bishop Auckland Civic SocietyThe Zurbarans at Auckland Castle

As part of Bishop Auckland Civic Society’s local history lecture series Elizabeth Conran, former curator of Bowes Museum and expert on classical Spanish art and Dr Robert McManners, author of the recently published book ‘The Zurbarans at Auckland Castle’, will speak on one of the great experiences of European Religious Art which can be found here in Bishop Auckland.
The talk and the book reveal the incredible story of how and why men of principle have risked their reputations and their lives over this series of paintings and why they are so vitally important to Auckland Castle and the heritage of this region.
All tickets £2.00 – free entry to Civic Society members.
The book is available at the Town Hall price £5.00. It will also be available on the evening of the talk.
The Annual General Meeting of Bishop Auckland Civic Society will precede the talk and will be held at 6.30pm in the Town Hall. All members are welcome.

Drop in sessions for those interested in finding out more about their family history. Staff will be on hand between 10.00am – 12noon and 2.00pm – 4.00pm to point you in the right direction.
