Local History
The following events form part of Bishop Auckland Civic Society's annual programme. The Society was formed in 1989 to safeguard the character of Bishop Auckland and to stimulate public awareness and interest in the town - past, present and future. It holds bi-monthly meetings in the Town Hall and new members are always welcome.

West Auckland: 1909 World Champions!
Tuesday 22 September at 7.30pm
John Phelan, Press Officer of the Durham Amateur Football Trust (D.A.F.T.) has been undertaking research into West Auckland’s World Cup football triumph of 1909… or was it? Come along and find out more.
This talk will be preceded at 7.00pm by the BACS AGM.

Laurel and Hardy Appreciation Society
The first Tuesday of the month, 7.30pm
Stan Laurel lived his early life in the town, where his father managed the original Eden Theater. Members of the ‘Hog Wild Tent’ celebrate this connection, and enjoy these monthly meetings as an opportunity to get together and watch Stan and Olly in classic action.
