An opportunity to view enlarged black and white images of Bishop Auckland and the surrounding area through archive photographs and lithographs from our County Records Office collection and the Historic England Archive.
This exhibition will grow throughout its time in the gallery as work by the participants of our photography, creative writing and fine art Engage Workshops will have the opportunity to see their work added alongside, giving both a historic and current view of our town.
The exhibition’s images show some of the places included in Bishop Auckland’s new Heritage Action Zone, a 5 year project by Historic England and Durham County Council to use our history to help bring new economic life to parts of the town centre.
Join photographer Louise Taylor on a photo-walk exploring Bishop Auckland.
Using archive images of the town as inspiration you will create new photographic work to be exhibited alongside the archive images in the gallery, giving the gallery audience the chance to experience Bishop Auckland. No experience or photographic equipment required.

Mixed media art
Taking inspiration from the images in the exhibition and the creative writing produced as part of the project, each visual art workshop will focus on creating mixed media images. These will combine collage, photographs, writing, drawing, typography and stitch to create re-imagined versions of Bishop Auckland bringing together the past and present.
